Your Golf Cart Rental Has a January Deadline, and the Rental Company Will Not Tell You

If you are renting a golf cart, an art car, or an electric cycle that does not have human-powered pedals, it must be pre-registered with the LBDMV, decorated, and inspected before it gets a tag. The registration window runs October 2026 to January 11 2027, and the official page states that no on-site registration is permitted.

Unregistered vehicles get impounded.

Why this catches renters specifically

A rental company in Miami rents carts year round to people going to golf courses, gated communities, and beach houses. Nothing in their normal business involves a January registration deadline for a February event.

So the timeline that matters to you is invisible to them. You can book a cart in December, receive it on schedule, and still be turned away, because the deadline you missed was the event's, not the vendor's.

The order of operations

1. Decide you want a cart, before January 11 2027. This is earlier than most people book anything else for the event.
2. Register it with the LBDMV inside the October to January window. You need the vehicle details, which means choosing a specific rental rather than only a rental company.
3. Plan the decoration. Registration is more than paperwork. The vehicle has to be decorated and pass an inspection to get its tag.
4. Be physically present for delivery. The official page states that if you are having a golf cart delivered, you or an authorized signer must be on site to receive it.

The causeway problem nobody mentions

Rickenbacker Causeway is the only road onto Virginia Key, and it is a 45 mph road.

A golf cart or low speed vehicle cannot legally drive itself there. That is not an event rule, it is a road rule. So delivery is not a convenience you might choose. It is the only way the cart arrives, which puts you back at requirement four: someone has to be standing there when it shows up.

What about e-bikes

The distinction is pedals. The official DMV page states that e-bikes must have human-powered pedals, and that electric cycles without them must be mutated and registered. Standard bikes need no tag at all. Onewheels are exempt too.

Anything capable of exceeding 5 mph has to obey the 5 mph limit regardless.

So if you are renting an e-bike, ask one question: does it have functional pedals? If yes, you are in the easy category. If no, you are in the registration category with the carts, and the January deadline applies.
